Overview 

Bulgarian Telecommunications Company, headquartered in Sofia, Bulgaria, is a leader in delivering speed ADSL Internet, fixed-line and mobile communication innovations to mass market, business, government and wholesale customers. Our commitment to providing the right services at the right price has enabled us to achieve a significant market position with over 2 million fixed-line customers, 1.35 million mobile customers, and almost 300 000 Internet customers. 

Network & Infrastructure

We offer one of the most advanced next generation networks in Bulgaria supported by a newly constructed 2000 square meter data center. We've invested nearly BGN 1.2 billion since 2004 upgrading our network and aim to complete our digital network upgrade by 2010. We've recently upgraded our ADSL infrastructure in order to support today's growing demands for high speed bandwidth capacity. As a result, we are now Bulgaria's fastest growing ADSL provider.

Distribution

We have a mature distribution network with over 130 own channel retail outlets and over 4,000 point-of-sale locations in partnership with some of Bulgaria's best recognized retail chains including Jeff, Global Net Solutions, Office One, and Bulgarian Post. 

History

In June 2004 the Bulgarian government sold, following a transparent procedure, 65% of the BTC capital to Viva Ventures Holding, a subsidiary of the US private equity fund Advent International. In January 2005 the Bulgarian state launched the public offering of the remaining shares and offered 34.78 per cent of the company capital (2,869,573 shares) on the Bulgarian Stock Exchange - Sofia.

In May 2005 BTC was granted a license for the development of third-generation mobile telecommunication systems by the UMTS standard, class B (2x5+5 MHz). The permit is valid for a period of 20 years and the license fee amounts to BGN 42 million.

As part of the privatization deal, BTC was granted a license to become Bulgaria's third GSM operator, and in November 2005 the company launched its mobile services under the vivatel brand. Vivatel helped bring fair competition to the Bulgarian market offering real value and choice. As a result, vivatel become Bulgaria's fastest growing mobile operator following its launch. 

In August 2007 AIG Investments, though its company AIG Capital Partners, Inc. acquired 90 per cent in BTC from Viva Ventures Holding and from minority shareholders after it had received the relevant approval from the European Union and other regulatory authorities.

In January 2009, the BTC announced the merger with its subsidiary BTC Mobile (vivatel). Today, the merged company has one of the biggest portfolios of products, services and complex solutions on the Bulgarian telecom market. The aim of the merger was to improve the management efficiency, optimize costs, secure sustainable growth and introduce a single brand, client approach and product offers.

In September 2009, BTC and vivatel united into a new brand - VIVACOM. The change was designed to turn the company into a modern, open and client-oriented organization offering converged telecommunication solutions of superior quality.
